Now, here comes your prompt…
You are stranded on a remote island with no hope of being rescued.
You find only a pen, one sheet of paper and a bottle. You want to let people know what happened to you, who you are and how you wish to be remembered…

The Same by Niamh Mc Manus
He has one nose
I have one nose
He has two eyes
I have two eyes
He has two ears
I have two ears
The only difference between us,
Is the colour of his skin
Whistle blows
On the game goes
Kitted out
Ready to go
All the ‘cool’ kids are playing
But Joe’s standing on the sideline praying
Praying that one day, he will be accepted
And all this because he is that one little bit different
It’s not fair
It needs to change

Internationally renowned poet visits Lough Allen College
Steve Murray
On the 9th of January, Lough Allen College were delighted to welcome poet Stephen Murray who hosted a poetry slam workshop with a small group of eager transition year students. Stephen Murray was born in Dublin and educated in London. He began writing poetry at the age of eight. He has twice been a runner-up in the WH Smith and Observer Young Writer of the Year Awards. His debut collection, ‘House of Bees’ has been met with widespread critical acclaim. He lives and writes in Galway, from where he runs the Youth Speaks All Ireland Schools Poetry Slam, facilitating poetry workshops for teenagers nationwide. Stephen used a blend of humour and rap to engage the students. The students then had to create their own poetry. He noted that “It is not always essential to draw on personal experience, the use of imagination is central to creative writing”. All in all, the students really enjoyed the workshop and hopefully it will inspire them to continue writing poetry. As a result, many of the poems were entered into the Sean Dunne Young Writers’Awards Competition.

Department of Education and Science
In March 2012, the English Department in Lough Allen College had an inspection. We were really pleased with the results. They found lots of strengths in our subject areas and we found the recommendations of implementing a Literacy Policy helpful.
Update; Since our inspection, a Literacy Policy is now in place.
