New Junior Cert Reform
So as many of you may already know, English is going to be the first subject to change as part of this whole process. Lough Allen College was fortunate to be picked as one of the 42 pilot schools across Ireland to be at the forefront of this educational change. Our coordinator Brendan invited Annette Honan from the NCCA to facilitate a staff meeting and a Q and A session and from there, we did the following;
-Established school based teams
-Many staff members have had the opportunity to attend workshops on Short Courses, Key Skills etc.
-All staff members joined the JC2.O website (this website can only be accessed by the 42 pilot schools)
- Displayed an enlarged key skills poster in every classroom
First of all, why is it changing? The idea behind the reform is to enable students to make a greater connection with learning by giving them more power over what and how they are learning. By making learning more enjoyable for them, it is hoped they will have a better understanding and be able to relate what they are learning to their everyday lives but furthermore, to meet challenges beyond school life.

Key Skills
Key skills help learners develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes to face the many challenges in today’s world. They also support students in learning how to learn and to take responsibility for their own learning. IT will provide many opportunities to embrace collaboration and incorporate the key skills.
Assessment
English will be assessed at higher and ordinary levels.
